While coconut oil is truly one of the best things you can do for your hair, there’s a lot to be said about an oil treatment with ingredients that also deliver the goods to the scalp:

Herbal Hot Oil Treatment (via Mountain Rose Blog)

Ingredients (click the links to shop ‘em)

1 Tbsp organic rosemary herbal oil; antioxidant, antiseptic, stimulates blood flow (not recommended for women who are or may become pregnant).

1 Tbsp organic calendula herbal oil; anti-bacterial and ant-inflammatory

5 to 10 drops cedarwood or orange essential oil (optional)

Directions

Mix the oils together in a glass bottle and shake well. Fill a separate bowl with near boiling water. Place the bottle in the bowl and allow the oil to heat slowly for a few minutes. Test a drop of oil on your wrist to check the temperature. Rub some of the oil in your fingertips and massage into the dry scalp starting at the front. Using a circular motion, work backward toward the crown and add more oil as needed until the entire scalp has been massaged. Next, massage oil into dry hair from the scalp to the ends using a gentle motion. Cover your hair with a shower cap or recycled plastic bag and wrap a hot damp towel around your head. Relax for 20-30 minutes before shampooing out. Enjoy your soft, beautiful hair!

There’s a thin line between curiosity and ingredient junky-ism. Ya’ll know how it is—you go to the market strictly for eggs, and you leave with some exotic cheese, a jar of chutney that the sample lady convinced you you needed, and other randomness. Likewise, I’ll go shopping for a beauty pantry staple, like castor oil, and will leave the shop with a host of herbs and butters that I really don’t need. It’s no surprise that my beauty pantry is overflowing with a myriad of ingredients, many I’ve never tried. Needless to say, the inspiration for this mix is: I’m running low on facial cleansing oil, so I will make a new batch with ingredients I already have instead of buying something new. Sigh.

Castor + Hemp Herbal Facial Cleansing Oil

Ingredients (click the links to shop ‘em)

6 oz organic castor oil: has potent anti-inflammatory properties, but also excellent for healing and cleansing; very low comedogenic rating (most likely will not clog pores).

2 oz unrefined hempseed oil: has highest percentage of essential fatty acids than any other plant, packed with anti-oxidants and all 20 known amino acids, magnesium, and sulfur amongst other minerals; has a comedogenic rating even lower than castor oil (will not clog pores).

1 tablespoon dried organic thyme: kills bacteria that cause acne, even better than benzoyl peroxide in a recent study.

1 tablespoon dried organic calendula flowers: anti-bacterial and ant-inflammatory properties make it extremely useful in treating troubled and irritated skin; stimulates the production of collagen and minimizes scarring.

1/2 tablespoon dried plantain leaf: jammed with vitamins A and C and in calcium; anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties treats irritated skin.

1/2 tablespoon dried organic comfrey leaf: astringent that contains allantonin, which helps regeneration of skin by supporting the growth of new skin cells.

1/2 tablespoon dried organic dandelion leaf: neutralizes toxins, has substantial levels of vitamins A, C, D, and B complex as well as iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium, manganese, copper, choline, calcium, boron, and silicon.

Normally I will use this method to infuse oils with herbs. But for this mix, I stepped out the box and tried the “solar infusion method.” Kind of how us southerners fill a humongous jar with water, tea bags and lemons then sit it outside in a sunny spot to “cook” for a few days, but I digress. First, place the herbs in a clean, sterilized glass container, like a mason jar.

Next, pour the castor oil and hempseed oil over the herbs. Cover the jar with its lid and shake well to mix.

Place the jar in a sunny location for a minimum of 3 weeks. Shake the jar daily. When the herbs are fully infused, strain the spent herbs with a filter or cheesecloth, and store the oil in a jar. I’ll be using this oil to clean my face—for more info on the Oil-Cleansing Method, check this out.

With such herbal goodness, this would also make a great pre-poo or hot-oil treatment for the tresses. Will be giving that a try as well.

Are you an ingredients junkie? What goodies do you have lurking in your beauty pantry?
